Electric Vehicles

Electric vehicles are the fastest growing sector of the automotive industry, and we’ve been integrated in it from the start, producing bespoke components for prototypes through to full production electric vehicles.

Working with Volta to achieve their Net Zero Goals

Volta are producing the world’s first purpose-built 16-tonne electric truck, revolutionising commercial vehicle operations and delivering a next-generation driving experience. As a new entrant into the vehicle market, established in 2019, PSM's experience working with new product development has supported Volta on their journey from concept to full production. PSM produce more than 200 parts on this revolutionary vehicle, demonstrating the breadth of our capabilities.

On a journey with LEVC to electrify a London icon

Designed, engineered, and built in Britain, the world’s first zero-emissions capable electric taxi was launched in 2018. Working closely with them through the protype and development phase, we now produce more than 125 unique parts for the taxi. Unlike competitors vehicles built from conventional steel, LEVC products are built upon an anodised aluminium monocoque. Around 30% lighter than an equivalent steel structure, this delivers a crucial weight saving over a conventional steel body and frame. Our expertise in forming lightweight aluminium components in low production volumes makes PSM the ideal partner to make this vehicle a success.

Dyson’s vision for a battery-powered automotive future

In 2018 Dyson produced an electric vehicle prototype in the UK. The car was developed from the ground-up and didn’t borrow parts from other manufacturers. The first model was an SUV which could drop itself down to be more aerodynamic or up to increase ground clearance.

The prototype vehicles included a unique battery tray produced in Coventry by PSM. The high-capacity battery pack assembly was designed as an integral part of the body structure to optimise both weight and the space available for occupants in the cabin as well as providing the necessary rigidity and impact protection. The aluminium battery pack casing was flexible in design to allow for a variety of possible sizes and types of battery cell solution.
